Abstract
Sun light can cause skin damage and aging due to ultra violet ray exposure. Antioxidants are substances needed by the body to prevent damage caused by free radicals. Bay leaves is a type of plant that can be used as an antioxidant. The antioxidant effect if formulated as a topical preparation like a cosmetic such as a peel off mask will be very beneficial. This study aimed to investigate the effect of increasing Polyvinyl Alcohol and Carbopol concentration to the physical property of peel off gel mask preparation and the antioxidant activity of peel off gel mask. The result of this study showed that an increase of 4% PVA and Carbopol concentration resulted in good spreadability potency of 5.7 cm on (F1) and drying potency of 27.18 minutes on (F3). From the antioxidant test, IC50 score from the extract and gel mask of bay leaves extract were 16.811 and 23.922 ppm, respectively. The conclusion of this study was that peel off gel mask formula 1, 2 and 3 which consisted of PVA, Carbopol 940 and combination of both resulted in preparations that meet the criteria for physical evaluation of preparation, namely organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, drying potency, spreadability potency, and adhesion potency tests. Further study is needed to investigate other activity tests in the utilization of bay leaves.
