Abstract
VCO (Virgin Coconut Oil) is a product of the processed coconuts. VCO contains laurat acid which has antibacterial ability. Shigella flexneri is a gram –negative bacterium which causes diarrheal disease. This research aims to know the presence of antibacterial activity in VCO to Shigella flexneri and to know the difference of antibacterial activity at various concentrations. The antibacterial activity test was performed by paper disk diffusion method. Antibacterial activity is characterized by the formation of clear zone around the paper disk. This research used 5 consentration treatments, this is 12,5;25;50;75;100%, Ciprofloxacin as positive control and tween 80 as negative control. Based on the results of One Way Anova test, there is an antibacterial activity on Shigella flexneri with significance value (p<0,05). This shows that there are significant differences in the use of various consentration of VCO in inhibiting the growth of Shigella flexneri bacteria. The calculation of inhibition zones by using a capiler. It shows that VCO with concetration of 12,5;25;50;75;100% with an average diameter of inhibition zones of 7,13; 7,11; 6,46; 6,46; 5,83 mm. The consentration of 12,5% VCO is the effective consentration in forming the inhibition zone that with the diameter of 7,13 mm.
