Abstract

Background, Some factors affect the success of pharmaceutical and health services, including the rational use of drugs. Rational use of drugs and drug prescribing should follow certain criteria such as: the right drug, the right indication, the right dose, the right administration, the right time, the right patient, the right dispensing to prevent polypharmacy. Thus, drug prescribing should be rationale based on criteria predetermined by WHO. Drug prescribing pattern is regulated by WHO in 1993 through some indicators including the average number of items per prescription sheet, the percentage of generic drug prescribing, the percentage of antibiotic drug prescribing, the percentage of injection drug prescribing, and the percentage of compliance with the national essential drug list (DOEN). Objectives, this study analyzed the drug prescribing pattern applied for outpatients in Malawili Public Health Center from October – December 2019. Method, this study was conducted using descriptive method, which data were obtained retrospectively using systematic sampling technique. The population of this study included 360 prescriptions issued by Malawili Public Health Center. Results, this study showed that the average number of items per prescription was 3.43 item, in which most prescriptions had 3 items with a percentage of 25.0%. The percentage of generic drug prescription was 81.5%, while amoxicillin was found as the most frequently-prescribed antibiotic with a percentage of 38.9%. The percentage of injection preparations was 0%, and the percentage of drug prescribing based on the 2017 list of essential drugs reached 55.2%. Those results showed that the drug prescribing pattern in Malawili Health Center was not in accordance with indicators set by WHO. Conclusions, the analysis of drug prescribing pattern in Malawili Public Health Center was still far below the standards set by WHO in 1993
