Abstract

Background, dental and mouth problems in Indonesia have increased, including dental plaque caused by Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The way to overcome dental plaque is to use a mouthwash that contains chlorhexine as antibacterial compounds. Chlorhexidin has side effects such as mouth irritation, burning sensation and changes in taste perception. To minimize these side effects, herbal antibacterials are needed. Onions contain allin, alisin and flavonoids compounds that have the potential to be antibacterial. The purpose of this study, this study aims to determine the antibacterial potential of ethanol and methanol extract of onion on Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The research method, this research is an experimental study, tested the antibacterial activity using Streptococcus mutans bacteria that given ethanol extract and methanol extracts of onion with series concentrations of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50%, positive control of amoxicillin and negative control of distilled water. The data obtained were analyzed using the One Way ANOVA test and continued with the Ducan test to see the differences in each treatment. Research Results, The average yield of inhibition zone diameters for ethanol extracts were 5,22 mm (10%), 5,17 mm (20%), 5,96 mm (30%), 6,28 mm (40%) and 5,86 mm (50%). For methanol extract is 4,88 mm (10%), 5,23 mm (20%), 5,88 mm (30%), 4,95 mm (40%) and 5,65 mm (50%). One way ANOVA analysis followed by Ducan showed that both shallot extracts possess potential as antibacterial and did not have significant differences. Conclusion, ethanol and methanol extract of onion have potential as an antibacterial against Streptococcus mutans.
