Abstract

Background: The results of RISKESDAS in 2007 and 2013 showed an increase in dental and mouth problems from 23.2% to 25.9%, even in 2018 it increased dramatically to 57.6%. Dental caries is ranked sixth with a prevalence of 60% to 80% of the population as the most suffered disease in Indonesia. The use of mouthwash with synthetic active ingredients besides causing side effects, also only a few brands that have the ability to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria which is the main cause of dental caries. Purposes: Making mouthwash formulas from methanol extracts of onions and knowing its potential in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria that cause dental caries Method: Mouthwash is made up of three formulas with 10% extract concentration (F1), 20% (F2) and 30% (F3), then physical evaluation is carried out for 14 days on days 0, 7 and 14. Physical evaluation includes stability test, pH and inhibition diameter Result: The results of the formula stability evaluation, F1 looks more stable both color, odor, taste, turbidity and sediment compared to F2 and F3. The pH test formula obtained pH 6.3 for F1 and 6.0 for F2 and F3. The inhibitory diameter evaluation showed that all formulas have an inhibition with a diameter between 6-8 mm and there is a significant difference between F1 and F3 with positive control, but there is no significant difference between F1 and F3 Conclusion: Mouthwash of onion methanol extract has the ability to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria with medium strength and the best formula is F1 with a 10% concentration Recommendation: Suggest doing the inhibition diameter test using the well method, add glycerin to the formula, and do the co-pigmentation if using natural dyes.
