Abstract

Background: diabetes mellitus is a disorder in which blood sugar (glucose) levels are abnormally high because the body does not produce enough insulin to meet its needs, it is ranked 4th in the world cause of the deaths. Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions. Health literacy is often associated with chronic disease events and many levels of non-communicable disease (NCD) events such as diabetes mellitus. An individual with diabetes mellitus can be said they have less knowledge about their illness, lack of adequate self-care, and have poor health outcomes. Self Care is currently important in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Objective: To determine the relationship between Health Literacy o diabetes mellitus with Self Care improvement in patients with Diabetes Mellitus disease. Method: This study is non-experimental research with a cross-sectional design. The sample of this study was 30 respondents selected by total sampling techniques. The HLS-EU-Q16 questionnaire and Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire (DSMQ) used to measure it. Data analysis used the Spearman rank test. Results: The results of this study indicated that Health Literacy had a significant relationship with the level of Diabetes Mellitus Self Care (p = 0.001, r = 0.582), there was a significant relationship between Health Literacy and Self Care improvement in Diabetes Mellitus patients with a value of P = 0.001 <α 0.05. Conclusion: There was a strong relationship between health literacy for enhanced self-care in diabetes mellitus patients. Recommendation: Further researchers are expected to choose other variables to explore of health literacy which effected to self-care in patients with diabetes mellitus.
