Abstract

Background: The prevalence of kidney failure is increasing every year, kidney failure is ranked 12th as the biggest cause of death in the world. Problems that often occur in patients with kidney failure who undergo hemodialysis are thirst and dry mouth. Thirst and dry mouth can be overcome by sucking ice cubes. Objective: To determine the effect of ice cucumber on the reduction of thirst in chronic kidney failure patients undergoing hemodialysis at RSUD dr Soedirman Kebumen. Method: This study used a quasi-experimental method with a pre post test with control group design. The sample in this study amounted to 64 people and was taken using purposive sampling technique. This research instrument uses ice cubes and a questionnaire with a VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) thirst measurement scale. The analysis used is the Wilcoxon Test. Results: From the 32 respondents in the treatment group, the thirst scale went from an average of 70.62 (moderate thirst) to 25.94 (mild thirst), while 32 control group respondents from an average of 69.06 (moderate thirst) to 56.88 (moderate thirst) after undergoing hemodialysis. Statistical tests showed a difference in the reduction of the thirst scale of the treatment group and the control group with a significance value of p value = 0,000 (sig <0.05). Conclusion: There were significant differences between the control and treatment groups regarding changes in thirst scale before and after hemodialysis. Recommendation: The next researcher is expected to be able to examine other interventions that can be carried out besides sucking ice cubes
