Abstract

Background: Mental retardation is defined as a condition where a person's intelligence is far below average and is characterized by intelligence limitations. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the prevalence of mental retardation in Indonesia is 1-3% in one population, which means that from an estimated 1,000 residents 30 people suffer mental retardation with 80% mild mental retardation criteria, moderate mental retardation 12%, severe mental retardation 1% . This condition triggers pressure and anxiety towards parents Parental acceptance is based on the assessment that children with mental retardation are God's creations that have the same rights as other normal children Objective: Knowing the relationship between acceptance with stress levels of parents who have mentally retarded children in Extraordinary School Kebumen. Method: The research design correlational. The sampling method used was nonprobability sampling. Sampling in this study is purposive sampling techniqu. The number of samples in this study were 94 respondenst. The research tool used in this research is a questionnaire which refers to the conceptual frame work. Result: The results showed that 37 respondents (40.2%) had elementary school education, most respondents aged between 46-55 years were 38 respondents (41.3%), respondents belonging to the category of high acceptance were 82 people ( 89.1%), most respondents in the category of low stress levels were 65 people (69.1%). There is a significant relationship between acceptance and parental stress level (p = 0.001). Conclusion: There is a correlation between acceptance and stress level of parents who have mental retardation children in Extraordinary School Kebumen. Recommendations: The results of the study are expected to be used as information in subsequent studies about mental retradation children’s acceptance.
