Abstract
Background : Premature infants who have low birth weight tend to experience hypothermia. This is due to the thinness of subcutaneous fat in infants so it is very easily influenced by the ambient temperature. The effects of hypothermia on LBW infants include hypoglycemia, metabolic acidosis, increased oxygen demand, increased metabolism, shock, apnea, hypoxemia and continued death. One way to overcome hypothermia in LBW is by KMC. KMC is a treatment for low birth weight infants or premature births by making direct contact between the infants' skin with the skin of the mother or skin-to-skin contact, where the mother uses her body temperature to warm the infants to avoid hypothermia. Objectives : This study aims to determine the changes in body temperature before and after Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on LBW in the Perinatology Room of Dr. Tjitrowardojo Hospital Purworejo Methods : The type of this research is pre experimental with one-group research design pre-post test design without control with Paired Sample T Test. The population was 324 infants and the number of samples used was the maximum average number of patients per month of 35 patients or 10.76% of 324 with a significance level of 5%. Research result : The results of the average body temperature of LBW infants before KMC treatment was 35,960C and after treatment experienced an increase in average temperature of 0.70C to 36.710C. The results of the average body temperature test of LBW infants before and after KMC used the Paired Sample T test. The test results obtained t = 15,579 with p-value = 0,000. The pvalue = 0,000 is smaller than 0.05 (p = 0,000 <0.05) indicating that there were changes in body temperature before and after KMC. Conclusion : There were changes in body temperature before and after Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) on LBW in in the Perinatology Room of Dr. Tjitrowardojo Hospital Purworejo. Recommendation : Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) can be implemented in the provision of nursing care to maintain stable body temperature in LBW infants.
