Abstract

Background : Visual impairment and blindness are the main causes of refractive errors and uncorrected cataracts. Surveillance of world cataracts as many as 65.2 million people and in Indonesia 0.1% per year. Factors that cause cataracts consist of age, sex, medical history, corticosteroid drug use, smoking history, alcohol consumption, eye trauma, eye disease, UV rays and nutritional status. Objective : To analyze the factors causing cataracts in the eye clinic RSU Purbowangi Kebumen. Research Methods: The study uses quantitative and cross sectional correlational methods. The sample was 100 respondents with a purposive sample technique. The technique of analyzing univariate and bivariate data is through the chi-square test and the value of odds ratio (OR). Result : Chi-square statistical test of the 95 % significance level shows there is a cataract relationship consisting of age factors (OR = 8,145, IK: 1.02-64.7), DM (OR = 7.188, IK: 1.3-39.5), hypertension (OR = 3.8, IK: 1.4-9.6), ultraviolet light (OR = 4.949, IK: 1.9-12.5), while factors that have no relationship with the occurrence of cataracts (p value > 0.05) consisting of gender, educational status, occupation, smoking habits, and corticosteroid drug use. Conclusion : There is a relationship between age, history of DM, hypertension, and ultraviolet light exposure with the occurrence of cataracts. Recommendation : The results of the study concluded that sex factors and smoking history need to be studied more deeply, so that the factors that have been studied can be used as a reference to prevent cataracts
