Abstract

Background, leaf essential oil of lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf) and fragrant pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius) is a plant that can inhibit the antibacterial activity, one of which is Staphylococcus epidermidis. Research purpose, this study aims to compare the antibacterial activity of citronella leaf essential oil (Cymbopogon citratus (DC). Stapf) and ethanol extract of fragrant pandan leaf (Pandanus amaryllifollius) against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Methods, this type of research is experimental. Extract obtained by maceration process using 96% ethanol as solvent. Tube test and TLC test were performed. Preparation of concentrations between citronella leaf essential oil and ethanol extract of fragrant pandan leaves with concentrations of 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 100%, chloramphenicol as a positive control, tween 80 as a negative control. lemongrass and aquadest as positive controls on the ethanolic extract of fragrant pandan leaves, will then be tested for antibacterial against Staphylococcus epidermidis using the well method. The data obtained were tested using One Way ANOVA. Result, the results showed that the essential oil of citronella leaves had antibacterial activity at a concentration of 6.25% with an average inhibitory power of 8.8 mm, while the ethanolic extract of fragrant pandan leaves had antibacterial activity at a concentration of 25% with an average inhibitory power of 5.3. mm. The antibacterial activity of each concentration of lemongrass essential oil did not have a significant difference because p> 0.05, while the pandan leaf extract concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 100% did not have a significant difference because p> 0.05. Conclusion, based on the results of the study, citronella leaf essential oil and ethanol extract of fragrant pandan leaves had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis with different concentrations. Recommendation, it is necessary to do further research on the comparison of the antibacterial activity of lemongrass essential oil and ethanol extract of pandan fragrant leaves using different test methods and bacteria.
