Abstract
Background, Ganitri leaf (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) is a plant that has the potential as an antibacterial and can be used as an alternative for acne treatment. Ganitri leaves contain flavonoid compounds, tannins, elaeocarpins and polyphenyls. Compounds that have antibacterial activity are flavonoids and tannins. Flavonoids as antibacterial by destroying the bacterial cell membrane and tannins as antibacterial by precipating proteins so that bacterial cells cannot be formed. Research Purpose, This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol and methanol extracts of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaves to Propionibacterium acne and to determine the diameter of the inhibition zone. Methods, This research used tube test and TLC for identification of compounds and paper disk diffusion method for antibacterial test. The concentration series of ethanol and methanol extracts of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaves used were 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 100% with a positive control of 0.1% clindamycin and a negative control of sterile distilled water. Data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA test. Result, The results of the test tube in this study showed that the ethanol and methanol extracts of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaves contained flavonoids and tannins, the TLC test showed the presence of flavonoid compounds. Ethanol and methanol extracts with the lowest concentrations had inhibitory diameters of 2.37 mm and 10.62 mm, 50% concentration had 4.38 mm and 9.37 mm inhibitory properties, 100% concentrations had strong inhibitory properties with diameters of 14 mm and 10.75 mm so that it can inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acne bacteria. The results of statistical tests showed p = 0.00 < 0.05 which indicated that there was a significant difference in each treatment group. Conclusion, Based on the results of this study, ethanol and methanol extracts of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaves contain flavonoid compounds and tannins which have antibacterial activity, extracts with a concentration of 100% have the strongest inhibitory power. Data analysis showed p<0.05 significant difference at each concentration. Recommendation, It is necessary to do further research using different solvents and methods.
