Abstract
Background, ganitri leaf (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) is one of the plants that has the potential as an antibacterial that can be used as an alternative to overcome body odor. Research purpose, the aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanol and methanol extracts of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaves and to determine the difference in the diameter of the inhibition zone. Methods, This research is an experimental study using ethanol and methanol extract of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaves which were tested for compound content by tube test and thin layer chromatography. Antibacterial activity test was carried out by disk diffusion method. The concentration series used were 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 100%. Positive control was 0.3% chloramphenicol and negative control was sterile distilled water. The data were statistically analyzed using One Way ANOVA test. Result, The results of this study indicate that the ethanol and methanol extracts of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaves contain flavonoid compounds, tannins and alkaloids and the results of thin layer chromatography test indicate that the ethanol and methanol extracts of ganitri leaves contain flavonoids with rf of 0.72 and 0,79. Antibacterial activity of ethanol and methanol extracts of ganitri leaves showed strong antibacterial activity at a concentration of 100% with inhibition zone diameters of 11.125 mm and 11 mm respectively against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Based on the results of statistical tests showed that the ethanol and methanol extracts of ganitri (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.) leaves did not have a significant difference with positive control and negative control with p<0.05. However, there was no significant difference between the concentration series of both ethanol and methanol extracts with p<0.05. Conclusion, Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the antibacterial activity of ethanol and methanol extracts does not depend on the concentration where the higher the concentration of the ethanol and methanol extracts does not indicate the higher the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus epidermidis. Recommendation, Recommendation from this study is that further reasearch is needs using different methods and solvents.
