Abstract
Background: Diarrhea may cause death with 5 % prevalence of morbidity and 4% of total deaths in the world. Diarrhea suffered by children lasts for several days, which can lead to dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, and malnutrition, especially for under-five children. The initial treatments for diarrhea can be oral rehydration, nutrient-rich nutrition, intravenous rehydration if necessary, and zinc supplementation. Honey with Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) can be an alternative for diarrhea. It has an effect on decreasing the frequency of diarrhea of toddlers. This is because honey has high benefits which can overcome various infections that are triggered by microbes or bacteria. Objective: To know the application of honey with oral rehydration salt to decrease the frequency of diarrhea of children under five years old. Method: This study is a kind of case study. The participants were 3 children (under five years old) who met the inclusion criteria. Data was obtained from observation and documentation. Result: After having honey with Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS), there was a decrease in the diarrhea frequency – 2 participants in fast category and 1 participant in normal category. Conclusion: Application of honey with Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) can decrease the frequency of diarrhea of toddlers.
