Abstract

Background: The infant mortality rate (IMR) in the world is 54 per 1000 live birth. This is still far from the IMR target in the Millennium Development Goals, which are 23 per 1000 live births. There are 581 cases of neonatal death (IMR) in Southeast Asia due to tetanus. There were 84 infants suffered from tetanus in Indonesia in 2014. Improper care of umbilical cold can cause tetanus. The proper care of the umbilical cord can be done by applying topical breast-milk and sterile dry gauze. Objective: To know the application of topical breast milk to accelerate the release of the umbilical cord by using sterile dry gauze closed technique on newborns. Method: It is a type of case-study research. Data were obtained by having interview, physical examination, and literary study. The participants were 3 newborns who met the inclusion criteria. The instruments used were breast pump, cotton buds, sterile dry gauze, observation sheets, stationery and a camera. Result: After applying topical breast milk by using sterile dry gauze closed technique on the umbilical cord puncture of newborns, 2 respondents experienced the releasing process of the umbilical cord in fast category (3-4 days), and 1 respondent having normal release of the umbilical cord (5- 7 days). Conclusion: Application of topical breast milk using sterile dry gauze closed technique on newborns can accelerate the release of the umbilical cord.
