Abstract

Background: Immunization is an action that causes trauma due to the occurrence of pain. An effective way to cope pain of infants is Harvey 5S Methods including swaddling, side-stomach, shushing, swinging, and sucking. Harvey 5S method is a method that involves several senses such as vision, hearing, touch, taste, touch, and more effective at lowering infants pain. Objective: Revealing the Effect of Harvey 5S Method (Swaddling, Side-Stomach, Shushing, Swinging, Sucking) on Pain Scale of Infants Post Immunization Procedure. Methods: This study used quasi-experimental method with p ost test only control group design. The samples were 60 respondents taken by random sampling techniques. The intervention group consisting of 30 babies were given the Harvey 5S Methods, and the control group consisting of 30 babies was given the usual treatment done by their mothers namely being carried and cuddled to calm the babies. The research instrument used the FLACC pain scale (Face, Leg, Activity, Cry, and Consolability). FLACC pain scale measurement was performed after the babies were given intervention in each group. Results: The intervention group experienced mild pain as many as 17 respondents (56.7%), while the control group experienced severe pain as many as 20 respondents (66,7%). Statistic test using mann-whitney u test showed p value = 0.000 (p ≤ 0,005) meaning that the effect was significant. Conclusion: There was a significant effect of Harvey 5S Methods (swaddling, side-stomach, shushing, swinging, and sucking) on reducing pain scale of babies after immunization procedure. Recommendation: Researchers are expected to intervene Harvey 5S Methods on taking blood sample of infants
