Abstract

Background: Anxiety is an emotional condition such as fear, nervousness, and worries about events that threaten individuals. Surgery can be a cause of anxiety, especially when it is a major surgery that involves an incision. Surgery is an invasive medical procedure, namely opening the body with an incision and ending with the closure of the incision. Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the differences in anxiety levels between women and men in pre-major surgery patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: A quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. The data collection method used purposive sampling with the Hamilton Anxiety Ranting of Scale (HARS) questionnaire. A total of 42 respondents of pre-major surgery patients with 21 women and 21 men. Results: The study shows that 15 of the 21 females who were undergoing the major surgery respondents had mild anxiety levels (35,7%), 3 respondents had moderate (7.1%), and the last 3 respondents had severe anxiety levels (7,1%). While 11 of the 21 male respondents had mild anxiety levels (26,2%), 8 respondents had moderate anxiety levels (19,0%), and 2 respondents had severe anxiety levels (4,8%). Conclusion: There is a difference between the anxiety levels of men and women in pre-major surgery patients with the majority of women experiencing moderate levels of anxiety and men experiencing mild levels of anxiety with the results of the chisquare test p-value = 0.032.
