Abstract

Background: Hypertension is an increase in systolic blood pressure of more than 140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure of more than 90 mmHg in two measurements with an interval of five minutes in a state of sufficient rest (Brunner & Suddarth, 2013). Acute pain is a sensory or emotional experience. associated with actual or functional tissue damage, with sudden onset, slow and mild to severe intensity lasting less than 3 months (PPNI, 2016). Objective: To help patients reduce pain by using non-pharmacological therapy to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive patients. Methods: The research method was descriptive with a case study approach. The case study subjects were 5 hypertensive patients with acute pain nursing problems. The tools in this study were the nursing care format, the SOP for Progressive Muscle Relaxation therapy, and the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Nursing Care Results: The results of the assessment of the five patients had the same main complaint of acute pain. Priority nursing diagnosis in Patients I-V is acute pain which is included in the category of visceral pain where this pain is triggered by a disturbance in the internal organs resulting in pain response. Nursing interventions to treat acute pain are nonpharmacological therapy. The nursing implementation carried out was TTV assessment, identification of location, characteristics, duration, frequency, quality, the intensity of pain, identification of pain scale, identification of non-verbal pain responses, identification of factors that aggravate and relieve pain, provision of Progressive Muscle Relaxation therapy. The results of the nursing evaluation on the five patients showed that there was an effect of providing Progressive Muscle Relaxation therapy on reducing blood pressure in patients with hypertension. Recommendation: The results of this nursing care can be used as a reference for the management of acute pain in patients with hypertension.
