Abstract

Background: Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a condition where the heart is unable to pump enough blood throughout the body in the circulation process. Some patients who experienced CHF were found that they felt shortness of breath or dyspnea. The innovative intervention carried out is applying deep breathing exercises and semi-fowler positioning to reduce shortness of breath of CHF patients. Objective: To explain nursing care by providing deep breathing exercise techniques and semi-Fowler's position for congestive heart failure patients who have decreased cardiac output in ER at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Gombong. Methods: The final scientific paper used a case study approach with descriptive method. The instruments were observation sheets and oximeters. Subjects consisted of 5 patients having congestive heart failure with the main problem of being decrease of cardiac output. Results: The main nursing problem was decrease of cardiac output. After nursing treatment for 6 hours, it was found that the administration of deep breathing exercise in combination with semi-fowler position was proven to be effective in reducing shortness of breath and increasing oxygen saturation of CHF patients. Recommendation: it is a reference for the preparation of standard operating procedure (SOP) to reduce the scale of breath shortness of patients with congestive heart failure.
