Abstract
Background: The World Health Organization (WHO, 2016) estimates that 235 million people in the world suffer from asthma and the underdiagnosed mortality rate is around 80% in developing countries. Patients who suffer from asthma, the pattern of symptoms that occur in each patient may be different, there are patients who experience a continuous cough at night, and there are some patients who experience shortness of breath and sneezing at night. One of the respiratory disorders that can block the respiratory tract is asthma caused by bronchospasm. One of the asthma treatments is using peppermint herbal aromatherapy. Objective: to explain nursing care to asthmatic patients with nursing problems ineffective airway clearance with nursing interventions giving herborist peppermint aromatherapy at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital Gombong Methods: The research method is descriptive with a case study approach. The case study subjects that will be studied are 5 patients. The tools in this study were the nursing care format, Nursing Kit, SOP for giving herborist peppermint aromatherapy and the format for assessing signs and symptoms of ineffective airway clearance. Presentation of data that the author does by drawing conclusions based on subjective and objective data, which is presented in the documentation method and nursing care resume Results: The results of the study showed that the five patients had the same chief complaint of shortness of breath. The priority nursing diagnosis in Patients I-V is the ineffectiveness of airway clearance related to the accumulation of excess secretions. Nursing interventions performed were airway management and respiratory monitoring. The nursing implementation carried out was monitoring breathing patterns and additional breath sounds, positioning the patient in a semi- Fowler/Fowler position, giving O2 nasal cannula at 4 lpm, teaching non-pharmacological innovation therapy, inhaling peppermint herbal aromatherapy, teaching effective coughing, recommending the patient to bed rest, giving appropriate medication. program. The results of the study showed a decrease in RR after the aromatherapy treatment of herborist peppermint was 5-7 x/minute. Recommendation: The results of this nursing care can be used as a reference for the preparation of SOPs for handling ineffective airway clearance related to the accumulation of excess secretions using the Herborist Peppermint Aromatherapy Therapy method.
