Abstract

Background: Childbirth is a process in which the cervix becomes thin and dilates, then the fetus descends through the birth canal, which is then followed by the release of the products of conception from the uterus. In the first stage, the latent and active phases of labor pain began to be felt. The peak of pain occurs in the active phase, i.e., at 4-10 cm dilatation, which lasts for 12-14 hours in primiparas, and lasts for 6-10 hours in multiparas. One of the non-pharmacological methods to reduce labor pain is effleurage massage. Objective: To give nursing care for patients with childbirth pain in the first stage of labor at PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: This study was a descriptive case study with a cross-sectional approach. Instruments study used nursing care formats, massage effleurage procedural format, and observation sheets. Five patients in the active phase of labor and experiencing childbirth pain joined in this study as respondents. Result: The results of the assessment conducted on 5 patients found the main nursing problems of childbirth pain. After performing non-pharmacological measures in the form of massage effleurage in 5 patients in the first stage of the active phase, it showed that the five patients experienced a decrease in the pain scale. Recommendation: Further research hopes to apply the effleurage massage therapy as non-pharmacological management to overcome childbirth pain problem inactive phase I of labor.
