Abstract
Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lung disease that is classified as a non-communicable disease. This disease is characterized by persistent, progressive airflow limitation, accompanied by a chronic inflammatory response in the airways caused by gases or harmful substances. Objective: To give nursing care for COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) patients who experienced ineffective breathing patterns with a forwardleaning position at the Emergency room of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: This study was a descriptive case study with a cross-sectional approach. The instruments study used observation sheets and oximeters. Five COPD patients with ineffective breathing patterns as the main nursing problem joined in this study. Result: After all respondents got medical treatment and the nurse added forwardleaning position as non-pharmacology therapy and nursing action to respondents six hours a day during three days, the respondents' oxygen saturation (SaO2) increased, and their respiration rate was a reduction. Recommendation: The study results can be used as a nursing reference for giving nursing care to COPD patients who are experiencing shortness of breath
