Abstract

Background : Pain is a cause of stressor in children during hospitalization, one of the causes was the invasive procedure of venous puncture. Pain management is a basic need that must be obtained by children while undergoing hospitalization, one of them is non-pharmacological therapy by means of deep breath relaxation technique by blowing the propeller. Objective : To explain application of blowing propellers play therapy to reduce pain intensity during infusion procedure to preschool children at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Gombong. Methods : This study used deskriptive method with case study approach. The samples were 5 patients of preschool children aged 3-6 years old who underwent infusion procedure. The measuring instrument was an observation sheet with a Baker Wong Faces Scale. The propellers blowing play therapy was done by instructing the children to blow the propellers when they were going to have an infusion especially during a venous catheter would be inserted into the vein. Play therapy exercise of blowing propellers was given for five minutes in one meeting. Results : After being given play therapy of blowing propellers, the pain scale was severe to mild and the total average pain scale showed moderate pain. Conclusion : The play therapy of blowing the propellers at the time of infusion procedure can reduce the pain response, both from the vital signs and the patients’ expression scale. Recommendation : The future researchers are expected to provide deep breathing relaxation technique by playing blowing propellers to children during infusion procedure to reduce pain.
