Abstract

Effective cough is a nurse's activity to clear secretions in the airway. The purpose of this scientific work is to determine the ineffective airway clearance nursing care for COPD patients in the emergency department of the Majenang General Hospital. The method used is the nursing process which consists of assessment, problem analysis, determining nursing diagnoses, planning, implementation and evaluation. The results obtained from the primary assessment and secondary assessment in five patients with COPD had symptoms of coughing up phlegm that was difficult to expel, and shortness of breath when coughing. Basedon the results of the assessment on five COPD patients, the priority nursing diagnosis was ineffective airway clearance. The nursing intervention given to five patients with a diagnosis of ineffective airway clearance was airway management. The implementation given to patients with airway clearance problems is to teach effective coughing, deep breathing, semi-Fowler's position and collaboration in giving oxygen and therapy. The results of the nursing evaluation showed that five respondents said it was easier to expel sputum with effective coughing techniques and reduced shortness of breath. It can be concluded that an effective cough technique can help overcome the problem of ineffective airway clearance in COPD patients
