Abstract
Background:Coping mechanisms are a form of effort to reduce, control or learn to adapt to problems that cause stress. While the personality itself is an individual response both in the form of behavior and mental as an effort to meet the needs of self, emotional, frustration, and conflict. There are differences in personality, of course, different handling in dealing with problems or coping mechanisms in each individual. Based on a preliminary study conducted on 5 students of Muhammadiyah University of Gombong, 3 of them have an extrovert personality type with problemfocused coping mechanisms. While the other 2 have introverted personality types with coping mechanisms that focus on emotions. Aim:To find out coping strategies with extroverted and introverted personalities in undergraduate nursing students at Muhammadiyah Gombong University. Research methods:This research is a quantitative research with a descriptive design. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling with a survey approach. This study used a questionnaire instrument. The number of respondents in this study were 103 students. Research result:The results showed that 68 respondents (66.0%) had an extroverted personality type, 35 respondents (34.0%) had an introverted personality type. As for the coping mechanism, 62 respondents (60.2%) used problem-focused coping mechanisms, 41 respondents (39.8%) used emotion-focused coping mechanisms. Conclusion:These results conclude that most undergraduate nursing students at Muhammadiyah Gombong University have an extroverted personality type and mostly use problem-focused coping mechanisms. Recommendation:Further researchers can examine the factors that cause stress and the application of coping mechanisms in dealing with stressors.
