Abstract

Background: Asthma is a disease of the respiratory tract that causes bronchial hypersensitivity to stimuli and airway obstruction. The usual signs and symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and cough that vary from time to time with limited expiratory airflow. To overcome the shortness of breath, non-pharmacological measures can be given, one of which is deep breathing relaxation therapy. Because it is proven to be effective in overcoming shortness of breath in asthma patients and is classified as a simple action, it does not require tools so it can be done anywhere and anytime easily. Objective: Describing the effectiveness of deep breathing relaxation therapy to reduce shortness of breath in patients with asthma. Method: This research used a qualitative case study method. Data were obtained by direct interviews with clients and observation sheets. The participants were 3 female clients who had a history of asthma. Result: After applying deep breathing relaxation therapy for three days with a duration of 15 minutes, 3 clients experienced a decrease in respiration rate and symptoms of shortness of breath.
