Abstract

Background: Hypertension is the main cause of premature death in the world. Prolonged increase of blood pressure can lead to further complications. One safe treatment to control hypertension is progressive muscle relaxation therapy. The therapy can be done individually to reduce stress, pain, blood pressure, and various disorders of the body. Objective: To reduce pain and lower blood pressure of hypertensive patients by applying progressive muscle relaxation therapy. Methods: This study used case study method obtained based on interviews, observation, physical examination, and documentation for 3 days. The respondents were 3 hypertensive clients. The instrument in this case study is a standard operating procedure (SOP) for progressive muscle relaxation therapy. Results: After being given the progressive muscle relaxation therapy, the pain of patient 1 decreased from the scale of 5 to 2, patient 2 from the scale of 4 to 1, and patient 3 from the scale of 4 to 1. Respondents became more relaxed so that blood pressure decreased. Recommendation : Nurses should be able to apply progressive muscle relaxation therapy to reduce pain and blood pressure of hypertensive patients in addition to using pharmacological therapy.
