Abstract

Background: Gout arthritis is a disease caused by the accumulation of urate crystals in the joint tissue. Signs of symptoms that can appear such as pain, swelling, and burning symptoms in the joints due to the presence of monosodium crystal deposits in the joints that trigger the appearance of tophi. Non-pharmacological acupressure therapy can reduce uric acid and pain by stimulating the pituitary hypothalamus to increase endorphins and stimulate peripheral cells to activate the potential of other active cells, so that kidney performance can work optimally. Objective: To provide an overview of nursing care by applying acupressure therapy to reduce pain and uric acid level of patients with gout arthritis. Methods: This research was descriptive case study method by describing the results in the form of a narrative. Respondents' criteria included being diagnosed with gout arthritis, having moderate pain complaints, not taking diuretic drugs, compos mentis awareness, aged > 40 years old, no injuries, injuries and swelling of the legs. The research data were obtained through observation, interviews, and monitoring of uric acid level and pain scales before and after therapy. Results: There was average decrease of uric acid level of 4.15 mg/dl after being given the therapy and the pain scale decreased from 2 to 1 in the second meeting. Recommendation: The application of acupressure therapy can be applied as nonpharmacological method routinely to patients with gout arthritis to reduce uric acid level and pain scale.
