Abstract

Background: Asthma is a chronic condition which the airways become narrow due to inflammation and tightening of the muscles around the small airways. Signs and symptoms of asthma include cough, wheeze, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. These symptoms come and go and are often worse at night or during exercise. The triggers that can worsen asthma symptoms vary from person to person. These triggers include viruses, allergens, irritants (smoke), exercise, and changes in temperature. Diagnosis that can be taken is ineffective airway clearance related to airway spasm, airway hypersecretion, and/or allergic response. One of the non-pharmacologic therapies to overcome these nursing problems is deep breathing relaxation techniques. The deep breathing relaxation technique is a form of nursing care which the nurse teaches the client how to take deep breaths, slow breaths, and how to exhale slowly. Purpose :To explain the effect of giving breathing relaxation techniques on the respiratory rate in asthmatic patients in the emergency room of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital Gombong Methods: The present study is used a case study approach that was carried out on 5 clients of acute asthma attacks in the emergency department of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital in the period of May - July 2022, which were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Results :The results of nursing evaluations in asthma patients show that the nursing problem of ineffective airway clearance is partially resolved by the data on decreased shortness of breath (dyspnea) where the patient says it is more relieved, reduced to no wheezing sound, and the respiratory rate is approaching 24 x/minute. Recommendation :Future researchers are expected to be able to examine the use of other non-pharmacological therapies to overcome the problem of ineffective airway clearance in Asthma patients.
