Abstract

Background: Hypertensive urgency is a situation related to a severe increase in blood pressure in a clinically stable condition without any acute changes or threats of target organ damage or organ dysfunction. In this condition, there is no clinical evidence of hypertension-mediated acute organ damage, so it is often referred to uncontrolled severe hypertension. Hypertensive urgency can occur in a variety of clinical settings, but is more common in chronic hypertension (often not taking antihypertensive medicine or uncontrolled hypertension), with blood pressure usually above 180/120 mmHg. Patients with hypertensive urgency will complain of moderate to severe pain in the head radiating to the nape of the neck. One of the treatments for pain in hypertensive urgency patients is progressive muscle relaxation therapy. Progressive muscle relaxation is a systematic technique for achieving a state of relaxation developed by Edmund Jacobson. Progressive muscle relaxation technique focus on muscle activity, by identifying tense muscles and then reducing tension by performing relaxation techniques to get relaxed feeling. Objective: explaining the nursing care analysis of progressive muscle relaxation on hypertensive urgency patients with acute pain nursing problem in emergency room of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Gombong. Methods: The present study is descriptive research with case study approach of five hypertensive urgency patients with the main nursing problem of acute pain given the progressive muscle relaxation therapy. Results: The results of nursing evaluations of hypertensive urgency patients indicate that the acute pain nursing problem associated with biological injury agents was partially resolved by decreasing the moderate pain scale (4-6) to a mild pain scale (2-3). Recommendation: Future researchers are expected to be able to examine the use of other non-pharmacological therapies to overcome acute pain nursing problem on hypertension patients.
