Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by hyperglycemia. Oral antidiabetic treatment in the long term can cause resistance and cause side effects. The use of traditional medicine from plants as an alternative treatment from natural ingredients that have low side effects. Plants that can be efficacious as antidiabetic are red betel leaf and ganitri leaf. Objectives: For get the most effective dose variation in the combination of two natural ingredients that have the potential as antidiabetic drugs that are safer and have better effects so that they can be used as alternative treatments. Methods: This study was experimental using 36 rats (Rattus norvegicus) divided into 9 test groups. Negative control group, positive control, healthy control, group I EESM 100 mg/kg BW, group II EADG 100 mg/kg BW, group III EESM 100 mg/kg BW+EADG 100mg/kg BW, group IV EESM 50 mg/kg BW BW+EADG 50 mg/kg BW, group V EESM 100 mg/kg BW+EADG 50 mg/kg BW, group VI EESM 50 mg/kg BW+EADG 100 mg/kg BW. Test animals made diabetes mellitus with streptozotocin induction of 40 mg/kg BW by ip, blood glucose measurement using the glucometer method every 7 days. Result: Combination study EESM 100 mg/kg BW and EADG 100 mg/kg BW after 21 days showed a significant decrease in blood glucose (p< 0.05) compared to positive controls. Conclusion: The combination of red betel leaf ethanol extract and ganitri leaf aquadest extract had a better effect on lowering blood glucose levels than glimepiride (0.036 mg). Recommendation: Hispathological test of pancreatic cells is carried out to determine the active compounds that can regenerate pancreatic cells.
