Abstract
Background : Ganitri plant is a plant that is widely spread in Indonesia which contains flavonoids, tannins and phenols that have the potential as anti-acne. The development of ganitri leaf formulation as anti-acne drug has never done. Gel is a topical preparation that has better potency than other topical preparations. Gelling agents have an important role in the manufacture of gels because they affect the physical properties of gel. HPMC is a type of gelling agent that has good stability. Objective: To obtain an anti-acne gel formulation of ethanol extract of ganitri leaf which has good characteristics and is effective as an anti-acne. Methods : This research was conducted by making 3 gel preparations using the active substance of 2% ganitri leaf extract by varying the concentration of HPMC F1 (0.5%), F2 (1.5%), and F3 (3%). The results of the three formulas were tested for their physical stability by means of organoleptic, pH, homogeneity, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion and cycling test. The formula with the best physical characteristics was tested for antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acne and Staphylococcus aureus using the hole method. Results: The results showed that variations in HPMC concentration affected the physical properties of the gel preparation. This is shown from the results of one way annova test p<0.05. The best physical evaluation results were shown by formula 2 with a concentration of 1.5% HPMC. The results of the antibacterial test showed that formula 2 had moderate antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acne and Staphylococcus aureus with an inhibition zone diameter of 7.03 mm and 6.83 mm. Conclusion: Formula 2 of anti-acne gel formulation ethanol extract of ganitri leaves has the best physical characteristics and has antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acne and Staphylococcus aureus. Recommendation: It is need to make white powder extract and modify the concentration of HPMC to meet the criteria of viscosity and attractive appearance. You can increase the concentration of the extract to 4% or 8% so that the antibacterial activity is stronger
