Abstract

Background, Oral candidiasis is one of the infectious diseases of the oral cavity due to overgrowth of the Candida albicans. Candida albicans is a type of fungus that can cause infectious diseases of the skin, mucosa, vagina and internal organs of humans. Red betel leaf (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav.) and aloe vera leaf (Aloe vera L.) are plants that have potential as antifungals and can be used as alternative treatments for oral candidiasis. Purpose, This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the combination ethanol extract of red betel leaf (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav.) and aloe vera leaf (Aloe vera L.) on the growth of Candida albicans. Red betel leaf and aloe vera leaf have antifungal activity against the fungus Candida albicans, so this study will examine the effectiveness of the combination of red betel leaf and aloe vera leaf in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans. Method, This study uses the paper disk diffusion method. Series the concentration of the extract combination used was 5%:5%, 10%:10%, 10%:20%, 20%:10% with 0.1% nystatin positive control and aquadest negative control. Data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA test. Result, The results of this study showed that the combination of red betel leaf extract and aloe vera leaf extract series at a concentration of 10%:10% showed significantly different antifungal activity with other concentration series with p<0.05. This proves that a concentration of 10%:10% has the best inhibitory power with an inhibition diameter of 8.1 mm in the inhibition category currently. Conclusion, Based on the results of this study, the comparison of the concentration series with the greatest inhibitory power was a concentration of 10%:10% with a significant difference with other concentration series but the results were not better than the positive control. Recommendation, It is necessary to do further research using solvents and different methods.
