Abstract

Background: Cashew leaves (Anacardium occidentale. L) and arumanis mango (Mangifera indica. L. var. arumanis) leaves are plants that have the potential as antibacterial and can be used as an alternative to treat infectious diseases caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Cashew leaves contain flavonoid compounds, phenols, steroids, triterpenes, anacardic acid, saponins, tannins, alkaloids and essential oils. Compounds that have potential as antibacterial are flavonoids and tannins. Arumanis mango leaves contain mangiferin, flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids, polyphenols, saponins and tannins compounds. Compounds that have potential as antibacterial are flavonoids. Flavonoids as antibacterial by destroying the bacterial cell membrane and tannins as antibacterial by precipating proteins so that bacterial cells cannot be formed. Research Objectives: This study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of the combination of ethanol extract of cashew leaves (Anacardium occidentale. L) and arumanis mango leaves (Mangifera indica. L. var. arumanis) on Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and to determine the inhibition zone formed. Research Methods: This study used the well method for antibacterial test, for identification of compounds using tube test and TLC. The combination concentration series of ethanol extract of cashew leaves (Anacardium occidentale. L) and arumanis mango (Mangifera indica. L. var. arumanis) leaves were 6.25% and 12.5% with a positive control of vancomycin 1000μg and a negative control of DMSO. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16 with One Way Anova test. Research Results: The results of the antibacterial test combination of ethanol extract of cashew leaves (Anacardium occidentale. L) and arumanis mango leaves (Mangifera indica. L. var. arumanis) at a concentration of 6.25% which has the strongest inhibitory power, namely a ratio of 2:1 of 14.7mm, the concentration of 12.5% which has the strongest inhibition is a ratio of 2:1 by 15.6mm so that it can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Statistical test results showed p=0.00<0.05 which stated that each treatment group could inhibit bacterial growth. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the combination of ethanol extract of cashew nut leaves (Anacardium occidentale. L) and arumanis mango (Mangifera indica. L. var. arumanis) leaves has the potential as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus. The combination of extracts with a ratio of 2:1 at concentrations of 6.25% and 12.5% had the strongest inhibition, namely 14.7mm and 15.6mm. Recommendation: It is necessary to do further research by increasing the number of replications and developing it as an antibacterial preparation.
