Abstract
Background : The improvement of health care service has increased life expectancy. It may bring out negative perception that elderly people may become family's burden because of dependence and sickness. It should be alert that dementia cases in elderly in Indonesia are high enough. There were extraordinary spiritual activities done by elderly people. Spiritual activity is welfare demension for elderly to reduce stress, anxiety and dementia cases. One of them is Holy Qur’an reading habit. Objective : To determine the influence of the holy Qur’an reading habits on dementia cases in middle age elderly at Pasuruhan, Binangun, Cilacap. Methods : This research used quasi eksperimental method with pretest and posttest with control group design. The population were elderly people in Pasuruhan having dementia and able to read the holy Qur'an. Samples consisted of 28 elderly who were divided in two groups, i.e. control and intervention groups. Data were analyzed by both univariate analysis and bivariate using marginal homogeneity test. Results : The result showed the significant influence of the holy Qur’an reading habits on dementia cases in middle age elderly at Pasuruhan, Binangun, Cilacap as indicated by p value 0,005 (P=< 0,05). Conclusion : There was significant influence of the Holy Qur’an reading habits on dementia cases in middle age elderly at Pasuruhan, Binangun, Cilacap.
