Abstract

Background: Breast milk is the best main food for a baby. The time needed for the breast milk to flow out is influenced by oxytocin hormone and prolactin hormone. This can be stimulated to flow by having effleurage massage that can be applied on the back. Back massage with effleurage technique using lavender aromatherapy is an intervention that is expected to be able to help a post partum mother increase her breast milk. Lavender contains linalool which has main active substance giving anti-anxiety effect (relaxation). These substances give a relaxing effect on the central nervous system (hypothalamus) that can increase the production of breast milk. Therefore, it is able to support exclusive breastfeeding for a newborn baby. Objective: The study was conducted to find out the effect of back massage with effleurage technique using lavender aromatherapy. This is due to fluent the breast milk of Mrs. S, a 21 year-old postpartum mother with PIA0AhI in Private Midwifery Clinik of Midwife Sri Rejeki Wahyuningsih. Method: This study used a qualitative descriptive method with case study approach. The data was obtained from the primary data (interviews and observations) and secondary data (literary study and documentation). Results: The results showed there was a difference lactation after having a massage on the back with effleurage technique using lavender aromatherapy for 4 consecutive days. From the first day until the seventh day, the frequency of breastfeeding for 24 hours is 3 times up to more than 10 times. The flow of the breast milk after 2 hour-breastfeeding is increasing from the first day until the fourth day (about 7 ml and > 25 ml). Conclusion: Back massage with effleurage technique using lavender aromatherapy gives an effect on the milk production.
