Abstract
Background: Mental retardation is a condition of children who have lack of intelligence. They have both limited intelligence and ability to have self-care independence. Therefore they do need family support to help them. The family support consist of emotional, appreciatory, instrumental, informational, and social supports. Objecftive: The present study aims at finding out correlation between family support and self-care independence of mental retardation children at Karya Bhakti Extraordinary School C of Purworejo. Methods: This study used correlational description with cross sectional approach. The samples were 30 respondents taken by purposive sampling technique. Data collecting used questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis and corellation using the Spearman Rank (Rho) test. Results: There were 15 respondents (50,0%) who had family support at mediocre category. There were 17 respondents (56,7%) who had self-care independence at mediocre category. The Spearman Rank (Rho) test showed that ρ-value 0,029 < rs (0,05). Conclusion: There was significant correlation between family support and selfcare independence of mental retardation children at Karya Bhakti Extraordinary School C of Purworejo
