Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a serious threat to global health, and is one of the top 10 causes of death. Insulin injections in DM patients are carried out in the thighs, abdomen, upper arms, and buttocks which are injected in the subcutaneous or under the skin area. Injecting insulin by changing the injection site gradually can prevent skin changes around the injection site and reduce the level of pain. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research related to the relationship between insulin injection location and pain level in patients with diabetes mellitus to be effective and safe. Objective: to analyze the relationship between insulin injection location and pain level in patients with diabetes mellitus at the Palang Kutoarjo Hospital. Methods: This research is a descriptive correlation with a cross sectional approach. A sample of 32 patients with Type 2 DM were taken using a consecutive sampling technique. Results: The characteristics of the majority of DM patients at Palang Biru Kutoarjo General Hospital aged 56-65 years were 15 respondents (46.9%), and 21 respondents were female (65.6%). All respondents mellitus at the Palang Biru Kutoarjo Hospital received insulin injections located in four places, in the abdomen, in the gluteus, in the arms and on the thigh. Most of the pain levels were respondents with a mild category of 82.8%. Conclusion: There is a relationship between the location of insulin injection and the level of pain in patients with diabetes mellitus at the Kutoarjo Blue Cross Hospital with p = 0.000. Recommendation: This research is expected to be an evaluation material for the Kutoarjo Blue Cross Hospital in the care of DM patients by considering the injection site in the abdomen with minimal pain.
