Abstract

Background: One of the factors that cause menstrual cycle disorders is stress because stress will trigger the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal cortex, which results in the release of the cortisol hormone which causes hormonal imbalances that can cause menstrual cycle disorders. The concept of menstrual disorders in general is the occurrence of disorders of menstrual bleeding patterns such as oligomenorrhea (infrequent menstruation), polymenorrhea (frequent menstruation), and amenorrhea (no menstruation at all) Objective: To determine the correlation between stress level and the menstrual cycle of adolescent girls at State Senior High School 2 Kebumen Methods: This study was correlation analytic research with cross sectional approach. Samples were 222 respondents taken by purposive sampling technique. Data were collected on June 16, 2022 and June 30, 2022 using a Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 42 (DASS 42) questionnaire with validity test > 0.641, reliability 0.91 and menstrual cycle questionnaire with validity test > 0.46, reliability 0.792. Data analysis were univariate and bivariate analysis using Spearman rank test. Results: The majority of respondents aged 16 years were 139 (62.6%) and experienced normal stress as many as 54 (60.0%) respondents while the majority of respondents in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences class were 124 (55.9%) and experienced mild stress as many as 46 (66.7%) ) respondents. The majority of 116 (52.3%) respondents experienced abnormal menstrual cycle. Bivariate analysis obtained correlation coefficient of 0.449 meaning that there was correlation between the two variables with moderate level of closeness. Conclusion: There was significant correlation between stress level and menstrual cycles of adolescent girls at State Senior High School 2 Kebumen, with p-value (0.000) (< 0.05). Recommendation: For further researchers are expected to examine therapies that can reduce the stress level of adolescent girls which results in menstrual cycle disorders
