Abstract

Background: Stroke is a focal or global acute disease or functional disorder of the brain due to obstruction of blood circulation to the brain. Rubber ball handheld therapy can produce muscle contractions with external assistance, namely physiotherapy and mechanical devices Objectives: To determine the effect of ball grip exercise therapy on muscle strength in nonhemorrhagic stroke patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital Gombong. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental method with one group pre and post test design by making 2 groups, namely the control and intervention groups. Sampling used purposive sampling technique and obtained a sample of 36 respondents. Data collection using observation sheets and SOPs. Data analysis using univariate and bivariate analysis using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: In the intervention group, there was a change in muscle strength between before and after being given rubber ball handheld therapy with an average increase of 2.56 to 3.50. There was no change in muscle strength in the control group between before and after not being given a rubber ball grip with an average decrease of 2.39 to 2.11. Conclusion: There is an effect of rubber ball handheld therapy exercise on increasing muscle strength in stroke patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital Gombong with a pvalue of 0.001 (<0.05) Recommendation: For further researchers, it is hoped that they can research new actions or innovations to increase muscle strength.
