Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that requires long term treatment, causing DM patients to experience physical and psychological changes that can reduce the patient integrity. Therefore, efforts are needed to improve the integrity and process of adaptation to disease to minimize the occurrence of complications. One of the nursing theories related to adaptation is the Callista Roy adaptation model where the family acts as a support system for the adjustment of DM patients. Objective: To analyze the role of family as a support system in adjustment of Diabetes Mellitus patients based on adaptation theory of Callista Roy. Method: The present study used cross sectional method. The study population was inpatient DM patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Gombong. The samples were taken by purposive sampling technique of 40 patients. Data collection used questionnaire that was analyzed by the Spearman rank. Results: The most of patients had a high family role as many as 20 (50%), and most had an adaptive adaptation response of 26 (65%) with the results of the Spearman rank 0.838 with a significance of < 0.001 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is correlation between the role of the family as a support system and the adjustment of diabetes mellitus patients based on Callista Roy's adaptation theory. Recommendation: For future studies it is hoped that researchers will examine related factors that influence self-adjustment adaptation of DM patients.
