Abstract

Background: The incidence of shivering in patients with spinal anesthesia in the operating room is quite high, ranging from 30-34%. One of the things related to shivering is the length of the operation. The duration of the operation is thought to affect exposure to low room temperature and trigger the effect of using anesthetic drugs, namely increasing body heat loss.. Objective: to determine the relationship between the length of surgery and the occurrence of shivering in patients with spinal anesthesia in the operating room of PKU Muhammadiyah Sruweng Hospital. Research method: the research is observational with a cross sectional approach. Samples were taken by using purposive sampling technique as many as 69 people. Data analysis used univariate analysis and bivariate analysis with the Kendall Tau test. The instrument used is an observation sheet to identify the duration of surgery and the degree of shivering. The results: Most of the respondents aged < 50 years were 49 people (71%), female as many as 41 people (59.4%), types of obstetric and gynecological surgery were 35 people (50.7%), the length of the operation time less than 60 minutes, 44 people (63.8%), experienced grade II and grade III shivering, respectively, 16 people (23.2%). The analysis test found that there was a relationship between the length of surgery and the incidence of shivering in post spinal anesthesia patients in the operating room with p value = 0.000 Conclusion: there is a relationship between the duration of surgery and the occurrence of shivering in patients with spinal anesthesia in the operating room of PKU Muhammadiyah Sruweng Hospital. Recommendation: Nurses are expected to always monitor the incidence of shivering in patients and take precautions to prevent the occurrence of shivering
