Abstract
Background: Poor sleep habits in nurses can have a bad impact on their health status. Having a heavy workload, nurses can experience stress, experience fatigue, and ultimately. These problems may affect the quality and quantity of sleep, as a result of which poor sleep quality occurs. Stress is also an important factor in determining sleep quality. The presence of high work and stress could make worse the nurse's sleep quality and the condition of the emergency department where the nurse has to be ready and provide nursing emergency services to patients within 24 hours. Objectives: To determine the relationship between the workload and work stress levels with the sleep quality of nurses in the emergency department in PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Methods: This study was a quantitative research correlation design with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted in June-July 2022 at the Emergency department of PKU Muhammadiyah Gombong Hospital. Twenty-one respondents joined this study and they were selected by total sampling technique. The respondents’ data was analyzed by using the Spearman Rank test. The research instrument used workload questionnaires, work stress questionnaires, and PSQI questionnaires. Results: The resulting study showed that there was a significant relationship between workload and sleep quality (p-value = 0.002), and there was a significant relationship between work stress and sleep quality (p-value = 0.000). Conclusion: The nursing workload in the emergency department has moderate level, the occupational stress experienced by nurses in the emergency department is mild levels, and the sleep quality of nurses who work in the emergency department was poor levels. Recommendations: Further research is needed to find out factors related to workload, occupational stress, and sleep quality of nurses and explore them with qualitative methods.
