Abstract
Background: The patient’s family is the support system for the patient. The high mortality rate in the Intensive Care Unit makes feeling anxious for patient’s family. The level of anxiety in the patient’s family depends on how they have a coping mechanism to use for. When the patient’s family gets excessive anxiety, it will impact the decision-making of the treatment process for the patient. The coping mechanism needs for patients’ family to overcome their anxiety. If coping mechanisms are utilized properly, they can help reduce anxiety. Objectives: To know the relationship between the level of anxiety and coping mechanisms of patients’ families in the Intensive Care Unit of RSUD dr. Sudirman of Kebumen. Methods: This study was a descriptive correlation with the cross-sectional approach. The sample study was 50 respondents with a total sampling technique. Analysis of the data used a frequency distribution and analysis of bivariate applied the spearman rho test. Result: The results showed that there was a significant relationship between the level of anxiety on the coping mechanisms of the patient's family with a p-value = 0.000 (p <0.005). Conclusion: The level of anxiety in the patient’s patient family was at moderate levels, and the coping mechanism used by the patient’s family were coping mechanism maladaptive. Recommendations: Need more research to explore the anxiety and coping mechanisms of the patient’s family using the criteria for patients with disorders of consciousness.
