Abstract

Background: Families who have members with mental disorders can also be affected by the stigma given by the community to ODGJ. The factors causing the emergence of public stigma against people with mental disorders are knowledge and education. Education for families with ODGJ through mental health education is one of the family mental health care programs by providing information and education through therapeutic communication. Mental health education aims to increase the family's understanding of the disease, its symptoms, treatment and how to care for the patient. Objective: To determine the effect of mental health education on knowledge of internal stigma in families with mental disorders at the Puskesmas Buluspesantren I. Methods: The research method is a quasi-experimental design with one group pre-test-post-test design. The author took data from 33 people who were taken by purposive sampling. Instruments in the form of SAP mental health education, booklets and observation sheets and the Peer Mental Illness Stigmatization Scale (PMISS). Education is given 2 times for 45 minutes on different days. Result : Prior to the provision of mental health education, most families at the Buluspesantren I Health Center had sufficient knowledge of internal stigma (81.8%). After the provision of mental health education, most of the families at the Puskesmas Buluspesantren I had sufficient knowledge of the internal stigma category of 29 respondents (87.9%). There is an effect of mental health education on knowledge of internal stigma in families with p value = 0.000. Conclusion: There is an effect of mental health education on knowledge of internal stigma in families with mental disorders at the Puskesmas Buluspesantren I. Recommendation: Future research is expected to be able to dig deeper into the needs of families with mental disorders in addition to health education needs
