Abstract

Background: Final year students in tertiary institutions have an obligation to complete the final project of a scientific paper or thesis, as one of the requirements for graduation. Final year students in writing a thesis, of course, have psychological disorders, one of which is experiencing anxiety, this is because of obstacles or challenges, in writing a thesis. Anxiety experienced by final year students, of course, will affect students in the process of writing a thesis, which will affect the graduation of students, therefore the anxiety experienced by final year students must be overcome, namely by therapy. One of the therapies that can overcome the level of anxiety is expressive writing therapy. Objective: To determine the effect of the effectiveness of expressive writing therapy, on the anxiety level of final year students, in writing a thesis at the Muhammadiyah University of Gombong. Methods: This study uses quantitative research methods, with a Quasi Experimental design, with a cross sectional approach. The number of samples was 34 respondents, with intervention treatment carried out by researchers, namely by dividing 34 respondents into 7 groups where each group consisted of 4 to 5 respondents. Each group received the same intervention, namely 3 times the intervention with each intervention time of 50 minutes. Data analysis using Paired T-test Paired. Research result: Most of the final year students are aged 21-23 years (94.1%), the gender of the majority is female as many as 26 respondens (76.5%). The anxiety level of the final year students before and after the intervention had the same anxiety level category, namely the moderate level category, namely the moderate level of anxiety, but there was a decrease in the number of frequincies, namely the pre test of 18 respondents and the post test of 13 respondents. Thus, there is a significant influence on the level of anxiety before and after the effectiveness of Exspressive Writing Therapy on the Anxiety levels of final year students at the Muhammadiyah University of Gombong of 0,05%. Conclusion: There is a significant effect of Exspressive Writing Therapy on the anxiety level of final year students before and after the effectiveness of expressive writing therapy treatment on the anxiety level of final year students at the Muhammadiyah University of Gombong with a value of sig.2 tailed 0.00 (<0.05). Recommendation: For educational institutions, namely the Muhammadiyah University of Gombong, it is hoped that writing therapy that has been carried out by researchers will become a form of training and therapy and can be implemented in the campus learning process to reduce the level of final year student’s anxiety in writing thesis.
