Abstract

Background, The aging process causes a person to experience various health problems such as gradual physical, mental, and social decline. One form of problems in the elderly is a decline in cognitive function. It was recorded at the Sempor Health Center in 2019 in Sempor District that there were 8,827 elderly people consisting of 4,537 women and 4,290 men. To prevent cognitive impairment, it is recommended for the elderly to continue to train the brain using one way of playing puzzles. The other way is by reading a lot, engaging in research by sharpening the brain like filling out a crossword puzzle. The purpose of the study, was to compare puzzle therapy with crossword puzzle therapy in improving cognitive function in the elderly at Mawar Integrated Service Post of Sempor Village. Research Methods, The research method is a quasi experimental two group pretest posttest. This study involved 32 samples taken by total sampling. The research instrument was SOP for puzzle therapy and crossword puzzle therapy as well as MMSE (Mini Mental Scale Examination) questionnaire. Research Results, The results of the Paired T-test puzzle therapy obtained a mean of 1.56 and crossword puzzle therapy obtained a mean of 2.13. The results of the Independent T-test showed the results of 0.562 which was indicated by a p value of 0.048. In conclusion, there is a difference between puzzle and crossword puzzle therapy in improving cognitive function in the elderly at Mawar Integrated Service Post of Sempor Village Recommendation, It is necessary to conduct research under the age of 60 years on cognitive function so that it can be used as a comparison with cognitive function in the elderly aged 60 years or more.
