Abstract

Background: Children with mental health disorders will have limitations in self-care, such as brushing teeth. The storytelling method is one way to deliver learning material through stories that can attract children using visual media. Method: This study used a quantitative design with a quasi-experimental method (one group preposttest design). The sample in this study was 34 children with special needs (total sampling technique). The measuring instrument used an observation sheet. The intervention group was given a picture story about brushing teeth and then given health education with repeated explanations. Result: Most respondents who carried toothbrushing were not suitable, totalling 24 children (70.6%). While those who did not correctly one child (2.9%). Data analysed shown there was a significant effect on learning using illustrated stories on the ability to take care of children with mental health disorders (brush teeth). Conclusion: Health education about brushing teeth used illustrated stories can improve tooth brushing practice in children with mental health disorders.
