Abstract

Background: Caring is a nurse's behavior that provides health services to patients and caring is an attitude of taking care, and respecting someone with one another, however there are nurses who still consider the implementation of oral hygiene as an unimportant action for patients who are on a ventilator. Objective: To determine the correlation between nurses’ caring and oral hygiene of patients with ventilator in ICU PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Gombong and Dr. Soedirman Hospital of Kebumen. Methods: This study used a correlation analytic design with cross sectional approach. The samples were 24 nurses, 11 in ICU of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital of Gombong and 13 in Dr. Soedirman Hospital of Kebumen taken by non-probability sampling technique. Data collection was using a questionnaire and analyzed using chi-square. Results: The 24 nurses performed caring at good category (70.8%), enough category (25%), and less category (4.2%) consecutively, meanwhile there were 17 nurses (70.8%) who performed good oral hygiene. There were 6 nurses (25%) who performed oral hygiene at sufficient category while only one nurse who performed oral hygiene at poor category (4.2%). The Chi Square test result was 38,397 and p value = 0.000 (p value <0.05) so that Ha was accepted. Conclusion: There was significant correlation between nurses’ caring and oral hygiene of patients with ventilator in ICU of both hospitals. Recommendation: Future researchers are expected to deepen this research and analyze other factors related to the implementation of caring nurses with oral hygiene.
