Abstract

Background: Bronchial asthma is a condition in which the airways are narrowed due to bronchial hyperactivity to allergen stimuli that cause inflammation. Symptoms in patients with bronchial asthma include wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. Ineffective airway clearance occurs because epithelial cell activation stimulates bronchial hyperresponsiveness and goblet cell metaplasia, thereby increasing excessive mucus. The Buteyko technique is a breathing technique used to reduce the narrowing of the airways by doing shallow breathing. Objective: To describe the application of the Buteyko breathing technique in bronchial asthma patients in the Emergency Room. Methods: This research uses a descriptive case study method, the process of collecting data by conducting interviews, observations, documentation, and literature studies. The research respondents consisted of 3 asthmatic patients with the main problem of Ineffective Airway Clearing. The therapy of the Buteyko breathing technique was carried out for 3 days later to determine the effectiveness of this technique measured from changes in the value of respiration rate, pulse, amount of sputum, and additional breath sounds and recorded on the observation sheet. Results: After being given therapy with the Buteyko breathing technique for 3 days, the results showed that patient 1 experienced an average decrease in respiration rate of 1.67%, and a pulse of 7.34% with sputum, nostrils, and no wheezing. In patient 2, there was an average decrease in respiration rate of 2.34% and pulse 7.67%, wheezing and nostrils became absent. In patient 3 experienced an average decrease in respiration rate of 2% and pulse of 3.67%, there was wheezing to no. Conclusion: The administration of the Buteyko breathing technique to reduce shortness of breath in asthmatic patients has been shown to reduce the respiratory rate, pulse, spurum count, and additional breath sounds.
